| | Tips For Caring For Pearls
Pearls are vulnerable to acid, alkaline anddifferent humidity levels. Perfume and hairspray, which contain alcoholand harmful acids, should be avoided. If pearls come intocontact with substances such as vinegar, fruit juices or detergents, immediately wipe that substance off. Perspiration can also harm thebeauty of pearls, dulling the luster. Afterwearing them, wipe with a damp (not wet), soft cloth ora silicon cloth.
Be careful not to dip pearls in water or wear while bathing, aswater can weaken the silk thread. Do not leave in direct sunlightor expose them to high temperatures.
Be sure to store your pearls isolated in a compartmentalized jewelrybox so they don't come into contact with other jewelry. Do not store your pearl jewelry in a security box for long periods oftime, since this may cause the pearls to dehydrate. It is recommendedto take the pearls out of such boxes frequently. | | | | | June Birthstone, Pearl
Pearls have been a passion and even an obsession of people throughout the ages. These gems have adorned crowns, clothing, and temples, and were said to be a favorite of Cleopatra.
Divers find natural pearls in The Persian Gulf as well as in the waters off Japan, the South Pacific Islands off northern Australia, and the coasts of Panama, Venezuela, and California. Most of the cultured pearl industry is in Japanese and Australian coastal waters. These gems come in a variety of colors, from pure white to pink, yellow, gray and black. They also come in different shapes and sizes.
From one of the humblest of life forms, the mollusk, comes the pearl -- a gem of unsurpassed beauty and elegance.
