Articles / Ice Storm: The Season's Coolest Jewelry Gifts

This is an easy one. What tops every woman's wish list for a holiday gift? If you said "diamonds," go to the head of the class.

This year, perhaps more than any other, diamond jewelry runs the gamut from big, bold and pricey to stylish, whimsical and affordable. You can find a diamond jewelry gift for every important lady on your list without breaking the bank.

Diamond rings, earrings and pendants are the hot gift categories this year, with a range of new designs that mix different sizes and shapes of stones. If you are considering a ring, think first of the modern classics: a diamond eternity band, anniversary band or a three-stone ring. Eternity bands are distinguished from anniversary bands, because they have diamonds that go all the way around the band, not just part of the way around. For a modern, everyday look, choose an anniversary band with channel-set round brilliant diamonds on the top half; for a more elaborate look, go for an eternity ring with baguettes or princess cuts all around. If she likes bolder rings, think about a wider band shimmering in pavŽ; it makes a big statement.

Like the eternity band or anniversary band, the three-stone ring is never out of vogue. Designers offer this elegant classic in a variety of ways: understated, with three prong-set diamonds, or fashion-forward with a white center diamond flanked by colored diamonds, rubies, blue or pink sapphires. Choose all diamonds in the same shape or a combination that includes trillions or baguettes at the sides.

These rings are available in a variety of materials, but if you are undecided, look at her engagement and wedding rings. If they arewhite gold or platinum, select a ring in the same metal. If her rings are yellow gold, perhaps update the look with a two-tone, 18-karat gold and platinum ring or white-and-yellow gold combo.

One of the newest items is the right-hand ring, a diamond ring that reflects a woman's personality and style. Most right-hand rings feature combinations of smaller diamonds and styles range from antique and estate looks to modern cutout, layered and sculptural designs. If rings are not your choice, think about selecting a diamond pendant or earrings. Right now, the most fashionable earring styles are those with drops, dangles or movable sections. Consider a three-stone pendant, a delicate necklace with several diamond drops or earrings with openwork, lacy designs ending in little diamond fringes that remain in constant motion.
